I worked as an editorial intern for The Herb Companion magazine from June to August 2009. During the internship, I uploaded text and photos to the website using a content management system, updated archived web articles and recipes, copy edited and replied to reader inquiries.
I also wrote weekly blog posts about better living through herbs, using herbs to heal and recipes with herbs in The Herb Companion’s Herbs in the Kitchen, Herbal Living and In The Herb Garden blogs.
The Herb Companion has since transitioned to Mother Earth Living magazine.

What is Boswellia Serrata?
June 17, 2009
I wrote this blog post to answer a reader’s inquiry about the boswellia serrata plant. Because I had never heard of boswellia serrata before, it took quite a bit of research to find facts about this plant.
When I e-mailed the reader back with a link to this blog, as well as links to other websites where he could find information, he was surprised and happy about the attention I had paid to his question.
Readers are vital to publications. This experience instilled in me the importance of providing excellent customer service.

I knew that inevitably I would end up itchy from bug bites or poison ivy. So, I wanted to find out what natural, herbal remedies existed to soothe these problems.

Best Herbs to Use for Grilling
July 1, 2009
I have a passion for cooking even though my dishes may not always turn out perfectly—or even close to perfectly.
Researching for this blog post about the best herbs to use for grilling was fun because of my interest in cooking, but it was also helpful as a writer.
One reason I love writing (and reading) blog posts is that they often squish a large topic into a manageable bit of information. In a world of information overload, blogs are an important way to engage readers.
This blog post condenses a large topic—herbs to use when grilling—into the best ways to use four common herbs when grilling.
